In the meantime, I am going to work on moving my blog to a (slightly) new location. It will remain on blogspot...but get a new name. I don't plan on deleting any existing content, just moving new content to a different address. Keep yer eyes peeled and, hopefully at least someone follows me to my new internet home!!!markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08115832567617717425noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7031914540848437055.post-78884347950484659192017-01-28T20:51:00.001-06:002017-01-28T20:51:06.578-06:00Took It Easy TodayI made it an easy day today. <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I am seriously in love with these knit handles. They have depth and detail that you don't get with other styles of micarta (or most other handle materials for that matter). This one was especially tricky because of the resin I used. This comes from an early piece when I was trying to find the right resin. After a few pieces I found that West Systems was the right stuff. This resin is a bit softer than West Systems once cured, and therefore slightly more difficult to sand. With some care and patience, however, it came out purdy darned good!</td></tr>

Once everything is assembled and glued, the screw and nuts are cut off and ground to be flush with the handle scales.</td></tr>

I wanted to get the replacement dimple die going first. I believe that some time in the next week or so, I'll go through the whole machine and cover it hear. Let's look at this die..<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">First step was to make the male portion of the die. Here, I am turning the OD down from 1.250 to 1.125. This was not actually necessary in the grand scheme of things. I was doing it to get a feel for the machine. From here, I need to turn one end down to .375" then add a tapered shoulder. I had oily hands...so I missed most of the pictures. Like I said, we'll get more in depth later this week. This was a matter of getting the part made.</td></tr>

My first impression of the lathe is very positive. It powered through the tough A2 tool steel. There are spots where it feels a little under powered...but this is a miniature machine after all! It operates smoothly and seems pretty accurate. I was getting good surface finish on my parts as well. Like I said above, we'll go through the whole machine later this week for a more detailed look.markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08115832567617717425noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7031914540848437055.post-17797301281399750092017-01-13T22:42:00.002-06:002017-01-13T22:43:59.501-06:00I Can Finally Make Round Stuff!st.That's right! Round stuff! Turning is now on my list of at-home activities. No more taking round stuff to work to do during my break!<br />
My 7" x 16" lathe arrived from thelittlemachineshop.com today. I'm pretty excited. As machines go, it is small...but there are smaller ones. I haven't had the time or inclination to finish my Southbend (which will happen eventually) so I figured a new 7" lathe would be a good addition to my shop.<br />
<br />
One quick thing before we get to the turny machine thingy...<br />

There is obviously A LOT more to show about this machine. Tonight was just to get it into service. Over the weekend I have a project to work on, and we'll see much more as time goes by. My first impression is that this is a solid machine and should suit my needs just fine. More to come!!!markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08115832567617717425noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7031914540848437055.post-63784481207980469982017-01-12T20:40:00.000-06:002017-01-12T20:40:23.209-06:00It Must Be Thursday"It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays." -Arthur Dent<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I took a bit of risk when I built my EERF grinder. The original design is all steel. I made much of it out of aluminum. These two parts form the sides of the "box" that the tooling arm rests in. The tooling arms I made are also aluminum. Rubbing two like metals together causes galling. The movement of the tooling arm in the box, over time, will cause this to happen. My solution is to make these poly shims to go under the sides of the box. We'll see what happens.</td></tr>

One large, one small. A little head nod, a homage, if you will, to all things steampunk.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">If you mention steampunk, three things come to my mind: copper, steel, and mahogany. All three are here! Mahogany scales, copper liners, copper nuts, A2 blade. I had to make the copper Loveless nuts because you can't purchase them anywhere. A little extra work, but well worth it.</td></tr>

I could have gotten more done today. Truth be told, I hate using my injuries as an excuse...but I had a hard time walking. My right ankle, the one shattered in my wreck a couple of years ago, was killing me. It was hard to walk or stand. Stairs? Ouch!!! Could be the cold, could be hitting the gym too hard. Could just be a fact of life. Only to find the inside temperature of my house at 46 degrees! I'm seriously going to take a cutting torch to my furnace one of these days. It's four freaking years old!! It has broken down four times!!! I'm not a happy camper. This also meant some lost shop time. Here's what I actually accomplished.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Grinding dust and sanding dust are part of my life. The problem is that I have a beard. Dust masks and respirators don't work so good with beards. I'll be damned if I'm going to shave!! Enter the Resp-O-Rator. Giving this thing a test drive. It takes some getting used to, but I like having HEPA filters!</td></tr>

Just doing prep work for the existing projects on my plate. Nights like this are good, I feel relaxed when I'm just plodding along sometimes. I made more of the copper Loveless fasteners, but I don't think we need pictures of those, since we all saw them yesterday. On to the new stuff!<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I'm a morning person. I'm up and at 'em about 2 hours before I need to leave for work. Time for coffee and all that. I think I need to make productive use of that time. I started a piece of black canvas micarta this morning.</td></tr>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The other thing on the list was to get some handle blanks laminated. I have a pair of knives that require a copper liner under a mahogany scale.
